Pre-Existing Condition
A health problem you had before the date that new health coverage starts.
♦ The Affordable Care Act put a stop to insurance companies denying coverage or rating plans differently based upon health status or pre-existing conditions.
♦ Grandfathered health plans may still have them in place.
Most grandfathered individual plans have disappeared. A few grandfathered group plans may still attach pre-existing conditions.
♦ But insurance companies have a way around the ACA. It is called short-term insurance.
Short-term insurance does not come with the same protections the ACA guarantees for regular insurance.
With short-term insurance insures can go back to the old ways of dealing with pre-exisitng conditions.
