Grandfathered
Grandfathered health insurance plans are those that were in existence before the Affordable Care Act was signed into law on March 23, 2010 and have stayed basically the same.
Grandfathered plans are exempt from some of the new regulations imposed by the Affordable Care Act.
• Very few remaining grandfathered plans are individual plans.
Those that remain are mostly employer sponsored plans. Over time these plans will be replaced.
