Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO)

An EPO is a managed care plan where services are covered only if you go to doctors, specialists, or hospitals in the plan’s network — except in an emergency.

EPO's are often compared to Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs). EPOs are restrictive like HMOs in that they have a limited network of providers.

EPOs are less restrictive than HMOs in that they do not require a primary care physician be selected or a referral to a specialist like HMOs.
