A process used by insurance companies to try to figure out your health status when you're applying for health insurance coverage to determine whether to offer you coverage, at what price, and with what exclusions or limits.

The Affordable Care Act put a stop to insurance companies rating plans differently based upon health status or pre-existing conditions.

Short-term insurance does not come with the same protections the ACA guarantees for regular insurance.
