Cosmetic surgery refers to procedures that are focused on improving a person's appearance. It might be surgery on the face or body to improve a person's self-esteem.

Most insurance companies will not cover cosmetic surgery. However, each insurance company may interpret the meaning of cosmetic differently depending on the specific procedure and situation.

♦ If surgery is reconstruction of facial and body defects due to birth disorders, trauma, burns, and disease, the surgery is usually covered.

In those cases the surgery is usually referred to as reconstructive surgery or plastic surgery.

Reconstructive procedures focus on improving function or normalizing appearance of the patient.
